How Does LASIK Work?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a two-step procedure. First, a femtosecond laser creates a thin circular flap in the outer cornea. This flap is gently lifted, and an excimer laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue to correct your prescription. The flap is then repositioned — it heals naturally without stitches. Vision improvement is almost immediate, with most patients seeing clearly within 24 hours.

How Does SMILE Pro Work?

SMILE Pro (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a flapless, minimally invasive procedure. The ZEISS VISUMAX 800 laser — the most advanced platform available — creates a precisely shaped disc of tissue (lenticule) inside the cornea in just 9 seconds per eye. The surgeon removes this lenticule through a tiny 2–4mm keyhole incision. No flap is created. The cornea remains structurally intact throughout.

Which Is Better for Dry Eyes and Corneal Strength?

Dry Eye Risk: SMILE Pro preserves significantly more corneal nerves compared to LASIK, resulting in dramatically less post-operative dry eye. This is the single most important advantage for patients who already experience mild dryness or work long hours on screens.

Corneal Biomechanical Strength: Because SMILE Pro preserves the anterior corneal stroma — the strongest layer — it is the preferred option for patients with thinner corneas, high myopia, or those who participate in contact sports or martial arts where a blow to the eye could theoretically displace a LASIK flap.

Range of Correction: LASIK corrects myopia up to approximately -12D and astigmatism up to -5D. SMILE Pro currently corrects myopia up to -10D and astigmatism up to -5D. For very high prescriptions, your surgeon will advise which is more appropriate.
